“I stayed up last night practicing,” said Ben.
“How do you practice handing a girl a note?”
“It wasn’t easy, but I tried, man. I really tried.”
“Not to laugh at your efforts,” chuckled Jake, “but you know that she’s the most popular girl in school and you are… well…”
“Me?”
“Right.”
“Maybe she’ll just think it’s a joke.”
“Maybe not,” said Jake, nodding toward an approaching Jessica.
She strode purposefully. The note was slightly damp as she pressed it into Ben’s hand. And then she was gone.
Ben unfolded the note as though disarming a bomb.
Finally, he remembered to breathe.
“Well?”
“She marked yes.”
This is sweet. I’m trying to guess Ben’s age; from their conversation I would have thought 14 or 15. Maybe I’m way out. No matter, it;s a super piece 🙂
Really enjoyed that. Yes, I too put Ben’s age at around 14? Will he get the girl?
Sweet. I like the detail of Ben holding his breath.
And I like how he opened it as if disarming a bomb 🙂
Absolutely delightful and makes me feel like I’m thirteen again!
Cute story!
Takes me back fifty years or so. A very original take on the prompt and the first one I actually liked.
I was wondering how to do a twist on this prompt (my forte … usually). But now that I know I can’t without copying haha. Nicely done!
Like the idea of a boy standing in his room handing his note to a empty air. Practice makes perfect
What a lovely story x
