100 Word Challenge | The Smile

The story of Paul Bunyan is a harmless one… but not the way Scoutmaster Parsons told it on the eve of the big parade.

Torchlight twisting his features, Parsons whispered legends of the bloodthirsty giant and his crimson axe. Since New York’s Central Park was the nearest that the boys of Troop 19 got to nature, they could easily believe that Bunyan existed in the wilds beyond the city limits. Their fear was evident by their wide eyes; their scoutmaster’s wicked glee by the smile on his lips.

Sleep came eventually, wakefulness immediately as their eyelids opened to giant legs dangling above.
